Traces of Brainwaves
In this performance, Cangxin and Yuheng seek to strip away the subjectivity of the body, transforming it into a pure, unmediated form of matter. As a medium, the body becomes a conduit for navigating pain, struggle, violence, and suffocation, expressed through sound and ink traces. An interactive sound device, designed by Haar, Thomas Gao, and Acrow, transforms the real-time brainwaves and heartbeats of Yuheng and Cangxin into sound, amplifying these signals to create a soundscape generated from their bodies. The performance turns their bodies into an immersive landscape, aiming to elicit an emotional and sensory impact on the audience. This is not merely a "show-don't-tell" statement but a direct expression of the synchronicity between body and spirit in its purest form.
Cangxin and Yuheng choose specific inks to represent their individual spiritualities. Yuheng selects black sumi ink, while Cangxin chooses cinnabar pigment, traditionally used in Taoist talismanic writing to expel evil spirits and invite auspiciousness. In Taoist belief, the five colors— red, yellow, blue, white, and black—represent yin, yang, and the five natural elements. Black, the color of yin, represents water, while red, the color of yang, represents fire. The combination of red and black forms a balance, as two opposing forces—conflict and harmony—merge within the same space, creating a new equilibrium from chaos. In pre-modern China, the combination of red and black was often used in important personal documents, such as wedding and birth certificates, signifying decisive energy and judgment. In literati culture, ink painting was revered as an art form for expressing the artist’s inner world. In this performance, ink becomes an agent that transforms the ephemeral into the permanent, the invisible into the visible, and the spiritual into the physical.

苍鑫与煜恒选择了特定的墨水来代表他们各自的精神性。煜恒选择了黑色墨汁,而苍鑫则选择了传统上用于道教符箓书写的朱砂,用以驱邪迎福。在道教信仰中,红、黄、蓝、白、黑五色代表阴阳和五行。黑色为阴,代表水;而红色为阳,代表火。红与黑的结合象征着平衡,正是两种对立力量——冲突与和谐——在同一空间中交融,形成了从混乱中诞生的新平衡。在中国古代,红黑色的结合经常用于书写婚书、出生证明等重要的个人文件,象征着决断性的能量与判决。在文人文化中,水墨画被视为表达艺术家内心世界的媒介。在这场表演中,墨水成为了将短暂转化为永恒、将无形化为有形、将精神具象化为物质的工具。
